How Cheap Is Your Happiness?

by | Sep 16, 2018 | Expanding self-awareness, Joy & Contentment

How much do you value your happiness? Are you willing to give it away to anyone who challenges your ideas? Are you capable of giving away being in a beautiful state to an email you received that triggered a reaction in you? Are you willing to bargain with it when you go onto social media and fall into self-comparison, letting your mind entertain that you are either better or worse than { fill in the blank } because of some carefully constructed image of what may or may not even be real?

Does the weather get to make the choices for you? Do you get frustrated when it’s not glorious outside? I see this ALL the time, people giving away their power to what’s happening outside. What about the inside?  If your good state is dependent on something as changeable as clear skies, what is happening in your inner environment? It’s possible you are stirring in constant inner storms.

What if you understood that you have power over how you feel? What if you realized the stories you tell yourself are exactly that: stories.  Have you considered what it would feel like to change those stories?

Here is a 5-minute practice that can help shift your attention and emotional state and help let the stories subside.  It is relatively easy to do at work, home, in your car (keeping your eyes open if you’re driving), on a walk, while you are making dinner, etc. All you really need is a couple of minutes to get quiet .

Close your eyes, deepen your breathing, and draw your attention to the center of your chest. Breath deeply into your heart space. Let your breath invoke space and a feeling of presence. Breath is the one place that, when we focus on it, will allow us to be completely in the present. When you focus on it, you are not in the past or the future. You are right here. In this moment. Once you have connected to your heart space, think of the simple things in your life that you are grateful for.  Breathe that gratitude into your heart space. Allow the feeling to flow outward from your heart with your exhalation. Continue this for several patient, conscious breaths.  Notice what has shifted as you experience full awareness of your calm, beautiful state and step aside from the suffering attached to any reliance on certain conditions, outcomes, validation or experiences in the outside world.

I am really enjoying seeking to spend time in more beautiful states.

with love
